“Employees are well remunerated and treated fairly. Personal development and professional aspirations are acknowledged and where possible, we help individuals to achieve their dreams.” ~ Clifford Ross, CEO
City Lodge’s reasons for excellence
- Employees are well remunerated and treated fairly
- Personal development and career aspirations are acknowledged
- Company assists individuals to achieve their dreams
- Limitless opportunities for development.
Our tagline – ‘people caring for people’ – is aimed not only at our guests, but at all stakeholders in the organisation: shareholders, employees, and the community at large. It’s a concept that comes through in every activity performed at City Lodge and encapsulated most recently in our newly launched initiative: ‘I’m Kind’.
The ‘I’m Kind’ initiative is based on the concept of ‘paying it forward’ – and advocates that it’s every person’s responsibility to create an environment of kindness. The ‘I’m Kind’ programme has been introduced to increase service levels, and is just one example of innovative measures we’ve taken to drive service delivery, and in so doing, encourage creativity among employees.
Essentially what we want to communicate to our staff is that yes, excellent service is guided by processes, procedures and manuals. But the key to excellent service is that it must come from the heart,” says Marcel Kobilski, Divisional Director: Human Resources.
Innovating around service levels
The ‘I’m Kind’ programme in turn engenders our novel approach to Corporate Social Responsibility. At City Lodge, CSR activities are not divorced from the rest of our business, but are seen as a natural progression of the ‘I’m Kind’ programme.
Awareness around CSR activities as well as environmental issues are high on the agendas of all staff members. The programme blurs the lines between our treatment of our customers, our suppliers, the community and the environment. They are all seen as one and the same. Positive behaviour in any area is recognised and rewarded.”
Kobilski points out the programme has spin-off for organisational change too:
From a management perspective, it’s about transformation, people development and changing the way we lead.”
A coaching and mentoring role
Says 27-year-old Abia Nicodimus Rakoma, who has a National Diploma in Hospitality Management and BTech (Hospitality Management):
“I joined the City Lodge Group in 2007 as a junior assistant manager and worked my way to my current position as General Manager of Road Lodge, Carnival City. My responsibilities include guest relations, labour relations, and management of accounts as well as overseeing health and safety issues, and the general day-today running of the hotel.
I love working for the Group because of the opportunities for development. I enjoy the challenges I face in my role as a young General Manager – it is important to me to mentor and groom other employees, just as I have been mentored. Individuals who are career oriented and dedicated will thrive in the City Lodge environment.”
An inspired and motivating company culture
Says 32-year-old Fatima Ebrahim, who has a Hospitality Management Qualification:
“As General Manager at Road Lodge Randburg, I have a number of responsibilities towards my staff and guests. I ensure that everything I do in my job is driven by consistently living City Lodge’s 12 Fundamentals.
For me, the best part about working at the City Lodge Group are the people I work with on a daily basis. Our company culture sets us apart and empowers our employees to enjoy a healthy environment – which of course results in happy clients.
I have been fortunate enough to work with my role model, Operations Director Ross Phinn. As a leader, he is motivating and inspiring and always pushes me to go that extra mile.”
