Small things to be grateful for this summer

“We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” ~ Cynthia Ozick

How often do you take a few moments to appreciate what you have in your life? We’ve become so accustomed to chasing big goals and material things – that new job/promotion/increase or that new phone/car/house – that we’ve forgotten to appreciate the small things.

We’re so focused on what we don’t have, that we forget to be thankful for all the little things that make a difference in our daily lives.

South Africa SummerSo we decided to put together a list of small things to be grateful for, this summer:

  • The weather. Summer in South Africa is glorious. It’s hot, it’s humid and the afternoon summer thunderstorms are the best.
  • More hours of daylight. It’s not dark when you get home from work. It’s not dark when your alarm clock goes off for the start of a new day.
  • Sunshine. Yes, sunshine. This means beach time, tanning by the pool, picnics in the park.
  • Bikinis, board shorts and flip-flops are acceptable attire. Forget scarves, gloves and woolly hats – it’s too hot for that!
  • Swimming. Whether it’s in the sea, in the pool, in a river or your office fountain – it’s hot and the best way to cool off is with a dip.
  • Everything is green and growing. Summer blooms in the garden, green leaves on the trees, the grass is green and lush. There’s so much beauty in nature to appreciate during the summer months.
  • Braai time. There’s nothing quite like a braai on a hot afternoon. A few beers and cocktails with friends is summer perfection.
  • Summer fruit. Pineapples, watermelons, apricots, peaches. All of these juicy edibles make summer totally delicious. And the best place to eat watermelon? In the swimming pool.
  • Outdoor parties. From music festivals to house parties – they’re always more fun when you’re not cooped up inside.
  • Our Christmas is a summer one. It might not be a white, snowy Christmas, but it is a hot one. So once those gifts have been opened and Christmas lunch is eaten you can laze by the pool. In the sunshine. In your bikini.
  • Air-conditioning. When you’re forced to be in the office, or in your car – be grateful for the wonderful invention that is air-conditioning.
  • Ice cream. Sure, you can eat it in winter too, but it’s definitely enjoyed best on a hot summer’s day when it’s a rush to eat it before it melts down the side of the cone.
  • Family and friends. Braai time, beach days and picnic parties are much better when they’re enjoyed with family and friends.South Africa Summer Activities
  • Summer breezes through the window at night. It might be hot and sticky, but when there’s a good breeze blowing through the curtains, it makes it that much easier to sleep.
  • The sounds of summer. The ice cream truck playing its jingle as it winds its way through the suburbs. The sound of a lawnmower or weedeater on a weekend morning. Crickets chirping, frogs croaking.

What are you grateful for, this summer?
